Wii component cables VS the bundled composite cables

My Official Nintendo component cables arrived today. Hooked it right up and started playing. The first thing that really jumped out at me was when I launched Zelda and saw Link on Epona, I was amazed. It’s sort of bitter sweet, it tends to sharpen the edges so much they become too defined, but it’s WAY better especially during motion. I took a whole bunch of screen shots.

Update 1: After playing Zelda for 5 hours after I took these pictures, I don’t think I could ever go back to the composite cables. The clarity was stunning, it felt kind of like a PC game the way things were so clean.

Update 2: SirVenom here. As of about Christmas ’06, MadCatz is featuring our images to promote their component cables. See it here.

Some things to note: These pictures OFF of the TV and even with an LCD you get scan lines (which are apparent in picture 4 on the left, those are NOT in game, but something the camera pics up on.
Also, I do agree that taking pictures of your TV (even in a controlled environment, like I did) doesn’t do the pictures justice. I’ve come to learn that gamespot has some really great “captures” with rollovers, showing the difference:

This is on a Samsung 42″ LCD TV.

Is that running 480p or 480i? I have my Wii hooked up with component cables but only have 480i and I was wondering how big a difference it was from the pack in cables.

This is 480p. The difference is pretty big, you can really tell when you’re actually moving around, these stills don’t do it justice.

480i and 480p would look the same in screenshots. i vs p has more to do with fluidity than pure picture clarity.

Umm, am I the only one who doesn’t think it looks better?

It seems with the A/V the “blurrynesS” is just used to cover the jagged lines on shapes.

I have seen other comparisons and just not sure if I should invest in some or not.

It looks like your sharpness is set way too high in all the pics, exaggerating edge transitions. Imagine a thin black line on a grey background – with sharpness set too high there will be a white halo around the black line to exaggerate the transition. Now look at the jawline and mouth on the Mii’s face. This is poor signal processing that works for selling TVs in walmart but actually degrades picture quality: think of listening to a stereo with the treble cranked. Composite video is low enough bandwidth that it rolls off the high frequency video content (think very fast transitions from black to white) so much that you can amplify the high frequency content by cranking the sharpness without much ill effect, but the same setting on high bandwidth component will give everything an etched look.

Since none of the pictures are of the exact same “frame” I can’t really make comparisons here. I can see differences, but if the point is to illustrate how the component cables change the picture, I don’t see it.

How is hooking up your system with cables that are meant for your TV, desperate? It’s just what my TV accepts as an input.

As far as graphics, I was 100% happy with Zelda before the component cables, this is just icing on the sweet sweet cake.

I certainly see the difference, but a large percentage of people are so used to getting poor video quality (it’s what we’re used to) that they really don’t know what to look for and where. I know that people buy LCD/Plasma for the space-saving, but “tube”/crt tv’s still give the best picture. I stand behind your move toward component cables, even on a $100 tv they will make a difference. Also like Al Dunstan said, using the Video Essentials DVD to properly tune your tv will also make a hell of a difference too.

GC Graphics huh? Could that at all be because it is still primarily a GameCube game? Ever think of that? Has anyone yet complained about the graphics in the GC version of TP? No, people are saying that they look superb for a GC game. Seriously, people really have to remember that TP was built for GameCube.

MY FRIENDS HERE THIS. I OWN A SANYO FLAT SCREEN 20IN TV THAT AFTER OWING A GAMECUBE FOR 3 MONTHS, HOOKED UP COMPOSITE AND LET ME SAY…IT MAKES A HUUUGE DIFFERENCE. THE WII WILL HAVE THE SAME EFFECT. AFTER COMPOSITE THERE IS NO GOING BACK. DON’T TRUST THESE SCREEN SHOTS, GET UP, GO OUT THERE AND FIND OUT WITH YOUR OWN TWO EYES. A REAL LIFE SIDE BY SIDE ON THE SAME SET, YOU WILL SEE AND THE REST WILL BE HISTORY.

I wouldn’t say the comparisons are stellar, mainly because they are photos of the image on a TV, rather than input directly into a computer.

My CRT has component input and the only thing I usually notice between SVideo and Component when using my DVD player is the colors seem more vibrant.

Going to be getting component cables soon for my Wii anyway.

I just bought the Component cables from Asyd and on my 16:9 52 inches TV: THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL! Everything still looks edged and squared… And yeah, I changed my setting to 480p…

I bought an official component cable and I’m loving it, but there’s one thing that annoys me: whenever there’s a blue transition, like the sky changing from night to day, I get these vertical lines on the blue area, they’re like half an inch apart and slightly darker blue. Also, when I play GC games on my Wii I get the same type of thing for all transitions.

I don’t know why Nintendo don’t make an accessory that scales the wii to 720 or 1080, that’s the only way to get rid of those jagged lines. otherwise you only get the super blurry image of 480i or the super colorful but extremely jagged lines of 480p. The cables don’t make a big difference with the lines, just the colors.

They don't make THAT much of a difference, but if you want the best possible image quality out of your Wii, the Component cable is the way to go.

    • Gregory

They do actually. There’s a HUGE difference in quality, at least on ps3. (I know i should be using HDMI but my tv doesnt accept it [1080i rear projection hdtv])

    • guest

they do make a noticable difference. The person(s) who took those pictures didn’t know how to properly use a camera. Like mentionned above, the Wii isn’t Next Gen and isn’t HD.
