After the Wii launch down here in Australia, I started to realise that a couple of Nintendo’s big launch titles weren’t on the shelves, the one of my most concern was Excite Truck, I though it had been cancelled to Australia due to our stupid classification system, but then realising it had been post-pond till February. Due to me being an impatient person, I got the game from Europe so I could played, seeing Europe and Australia both use PAL (Region block sucks) and when I pulled out Legend of Zelda it possible scream “don’t play it!. I popped it in and a run of nostalgia ran over me or some reason, as if I had done wrong. Whatever part of my body gave me than nostalgia rush over me had reason too, Because its not because it not that Excite Truck isn’t bad, it’s just got a big-game’s body with budget content.
Well, enough of my ramblings. Excite Truck is fun. Instead of having Wii-remote pointed at the screen, you flipped side-on and tilt it from side-to-side to turn you truck, and accelerate with the face buttons. It’s probably the best controls for a racing game I’ve ever seen, it’s easy to work out, while fun the process. You may feel a bit un-easy playing for the first time, but hey it’s the Wii, ‘everything’s different’.
The More surprising thing about the game is that finishing first isn’t the mission; instead you’re collecting a certain amount of stars, yet finishing in first place with give you bonus stars, so there is still plenty of chances to bull-doze the opposition. Boost is also done differently to other games. While you pretty much have unlimited boost, using it in a long manner, will cause your truck’s engine of overheat and cut-out.
Graphically, Excite Truck is current…While at speed. When you’re driving at high speeds it looks great with the outer blur effects, and other little nifty bits. But if you bother to slow down, it doesn’t look so pretty, the worst is the snow level’s, except for the water, the level’s look like someone poured old tin paint over dirt…Everything else is at a passable rate.
The real problem with the game is the amount of content it supplies. “Excite Run is the main single player mode, with challenge mode being the other single-player bit. Neither of these modes will hold your interest for long as their easy to finish them in 2-3 hours. Multiplayer isn’t any better, as it’s only 2 player with no AI. That Sucks. It’s as if Nintendo wants to make us hate this game, if that’s so, they’ve done a good job.
While Excite Truck is a solid game gameplay wise, that can be said for its graphics and depth. Anyone looking for a good arcade racing has two choices. Either, A: wait for a better one, but if that option never arises, go if B: wait for Excite Truck to drop to 20 bucks.
