Nintendo patents new controller?

by Hassan AhmedJuly 10, 2008

It seems that some snooping through patents has resulted in the discover of a new patent for a Wii controller filed on June 26th. As you can see above, the controller looks sort of like a Game Boy Advance, but with GameCube buttons and a possible slot for the Wii Remote to fit in. The patent’s text is very confusing, so I can’t figure out what the heck it is. If you’re willing to try and spend some time figuring it out, then you can check out the patent details here. The timing of the patent and everything makes it slightly suspicious, with Nintendo’s E3 press conference in 5 days. I wonder if this will ever see the light of day.

    I’ll quote Kotaku:

“What the?! Another Nintendo controller peripheral? This recently published US Patent and Trademark Office filing would certainly convince one to believe so! That is, until one looked at the date of the patent application submission, which dates back to 2005. Sure, the patent was published on June 28 of this year, but it references foreign application data that predates the official unveiling of the Wii Remote prototype.”

Yeah, there you go. It’s from 2005. It’s most likely a Classic controller proof of concept.

Yah… Just looking at this thing screams beta to me anyway…

The only thing I wish they would do is release some form of extension cable that would connect the Classic Controller to the Game Cube control ports so we wouldn’t be wasting anymore batteries on the damn thing…

They also made similar looking patents for some sort of N64 attachment and GameBoy micro attachment.

I would love to have the N64 Classic Controller come to see the light of day. \:D/
