Hot Topic: Declining 3DS Sales

by Steve CullumMay 29, 2011

As forum admin, I will be starting a new feature here on NintendoFuse. Occasionally, I will post a “hot topic” from the forums, which has been getting a great deal of discussion. I will post some of the points and link to the thread.

This week, I would like to point out a thread about the decline in 3DS sales. At the end of April, Wired posted an article about the low sales numbers. There have been a number of reasons brought up by forum members for the decline. Some state it is due to the low quality of the launch lineup, while others argue that the lack of the eShop and online store at launch prevented higher sales. Still others say it is all about price-point.

What do you think? Join in the discussion!

97, 000 for a MONTH! is PATHETIC! for new NINTENDO handheld

Too expensive, battery life too short, better gaming platform options at that price point, refried games, no worthwhile games, 3d effect poorly implemented, bad 3ds case design,

Zelda REFRIED only helped by boosting an extra 20, 000 in 3ds sales……terrible.

“we made very few Zelda 3ds games so that it will sell out”

A Weak launch title Lineup…. the Main Reason…..

Definitely due to the poor launch titles.  Okay, better to describe them simply as ‘games which don’t sell systems’, because they’re just not the kind of games people would buy the system for.

But the 3DS will do better soon enough, when the good games are released.

Thanks for your responses, everyone. Be sure to discuss this issue in our forums, though, as there are many discussion points already there, where you can talk further.

I think there are some key reasons why sales have not been that great. Firstly would be the price of the console itself. Nintendo made a big mistake by pricing it as high as they did, should have been no more than £150. Secondly would be the launch line up. Yes games like Street Fighter, Ridge Racer and Pilotwings are good games but people are not going to go out and buy a 3DS for these titles. The only game that currently fits that mould is Nintendogs and Cats, reflected by its excellent sales. I firmly believe that once the “big” games like Zelda, Resi Evil and Mario start to come sales will follow suit.

i would say that the reason is the same as the virtual boy: gives headaches, no good games, and over promotion.

    Meh! p***!!
    Refried Zelda?…crap!….p***.
250 dollars for crappy battery, no worthwile games on 3DS…bah! ………p*

A NO GAME 3Ds for 249 or a brand new Playstation Three PLUS a free GAME plus a 50 dollar gift card.
    Gee let me think(sarcasm).

    Get lost! Nintendo!

249 dollars for black ops games plus a new PS3 at Games Stop since it comes with a 50 dollar gift card.

The 3DS systems will sell once there are games that people want to play are out. Seeing how Zelda OOT 3D sold out in many places is a good sign.

With a brand new, original Super Mario 3D title on the way along with, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Mario Kart 3D, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, StarFox, Resident Evil, MGS3, Kid Icarus, and many more there is no reason this system won’t sell more 3DS systems by January 2012 that Sony sold of the PSP in it’s entire lifespan.

I would like to see Virtual Boy games on Virtual Console 3DS. This is the perfect platform for Nintendo to show how brilliant and ahead of their time some of those games really were.

Just how many units do you think the 55mln+ selling PSP has sold?! How in the world will 3DS outsell it this year?

Just because Zelda OOT 3D sold out, doesnt mean that 3DS systems sold…people already had the 3DS and probably were a majority of the people buying the game.

Well… except of Zelda OOT there is no other game that makes me wanting to buy it… They should have better games ready already upon the 3DS-launch
