Super Mario 3DS – Hands-On First Impressions

We all knew that Mario would eventually hit the Nintendo 3DS, but we did not know exactly how it would first happen. At last year’s E3, we were teased with a logo, which featured a tail. Well, the tail is back in the form of the Tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES). In fact, even some of the goombas have Tanooki tails this time. In my hands-on time with it outside the Nokia Theater on June 7, 2011, just after the Nintendo E3 press event, I noticed several elements had returned. For one, the stages are timed, which is not typical in 3D Mario games. Also, you will jump on a pole at the end of each level, except the boss stages, but there was no castle next to the pole. For those wondering if you can fly with the Tanooki suit, I tried to run around, but flight never happened. Overall, I was reminded of the New Super Mario Bros. art style, but it played much like a cross between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy.
